Dans Ordinary Things, il est encore question de migration et de ce qui se passe lorsqu’on transporte sa mémoire, thématiques qui hantent, depuis longtemps déjà, le travail de Zena Assi. Mais cet état migratoire, elle choisit de le raconter à travers des objets dits « ordinaires », comme les objets transitionnels dont nous parle Winnicott, qui permettent d’effectuer le passage entre le monde intérieur et la réalité extérieure en créant un espace intermédiaire où les deux peuvent dialoguer. A partir de là, l’artiste élabore une poétique des « choses ordinaires » chargées d’expériences collectives, traversées par l’histoire, les guerres et les déplacements.
Elle choisit aussi de le dire sur le mode du merveilleux. Une baleine flotte au-dessus de la ville. Un dromadaire marche sur les toits. Loups, poissons, oiseaux et insectes de toutes sortes – tout un bestiaire – se mêlent au monde des humains. Ils y rencontrent une figure phénicienne, une petite fille, un roi, et un nombre de caractères hybrides. Ils y côtoient une quantité de choses banales – théière, chaise, lampe – et d’autres qui le sont moins, soldats, avions de combat et drones. Sur une autre échelle, ces mêmes avions sont en train d’assaillir un bouquet de fleurs. En brouillant les ordres de grandeur ainsi que les limites du familier et de l’étrange, les peintures, les sculptures et les céramiques de Zena Assi créent un espace lui aussi transitionnel où l’ordinaire cesse de l’être, et où l’extraordinaire est apprivoisé.
Des bouteilles sur lesquelles se déploient des villes, comme sur des vases antiques, évoquent celles que l’on jette à la mer, pour une destinée inconnue.
Des colonnes fonctionnent comme des vestiges archéologiques qui nous font voyager dans le temps.
Le déplacement dans l’espace dont nous parle Assi est donc également un déplacement dans le temps, dans les civilisations et mythologies anciennes, mais aussi à travers l’histoire de l’art. On y croise les éléments d’une esthétique de l’estampe japonaise, des renvois à Monet, à Magritte, au Pop Art et, plus généralement, à la culture contemporaine.
Tout un foisonnement de références, de genres (portraits, paysages et natures mortes), de supports et de médiums qui peuplent l’univers soigneusement scénographié de l’artiste nous transporte ainsi dans un lieu suspendu où le banal, le singulier, le réel et le surnaturel, le connu, l’inquiétant, l’ici et l’ailleurs se mêlent et se côtoient.

Artist Biography
Born in Lebanon, in 1974, Zena Assi lives and works in London. The artist uses various supports and mediums to document and explore the cultural and social changes and put on record our urban contemporary environment’s imprint. Her work takes shape in installation, drawing, etching, experimental animation, sculpture, ceramics and painting. Themes that are central to her vision include present-day issues, like migration and the relation between memories and people on the move.
Many of her pieces are part of private collections as well as various public Institutions: Institut du Monde Arabe Museum in France, the Barjeel Foundation in the UAE, and the Academy of Fine Arts, ALBA, in Lebanon.
Throughout her artistic practice, her work has won prizes including the Sunny Dupree Family Award for a woman Artist at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, 2020 – the Rosemary & Co Award at the SWA show, London, 2018 and the Special Jury Prize of the XXIX of the Autumn Salon of the Sursock Museum, Beirut, 2009.
Assi has exhibited in solo as well as collective shows across Europe, the Middle East and the United States of America, including- Subtitled Apeal Royal College of Art (London, UK) in 2011, Artsawa gallery (Dubai, UAE) from 2008 until 2017, Espace Claude Lemand (Paris, France) in 2011 & 2021, Cairo Biennale (Cairo, Egypt) in 2010, Stephan Witschi Gallery (Zurich, Switzerland) in 2022, Tanit Gallery (Beirut, Lebanon & London, UK) from 2022 until 2026, IWM Imperial War Museum (London, UK) in 2018, IMA Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris, France) in 2021, CAP Contemporary Art Platform (Kuwait City, Kuwait) in 2020 & 2024, Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy (London, UK) in 2020, 2022, 2024 & 2025, MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art in Saoudi Arabia in 2025, National Portrait Gallery (London, UK) in 2026 and the 57th Venice Art Biennale (Venice, Italy) in 2017.
